Private firms urged to allow remote work during ASEAN Summit: Fahmi

PRIVATE companies located along key travel routes of the 46th ASEAN Summit are being encouraged to allow employees to work from home from 26 to 27 May, to help ease congestion and ensure smooth logistics for attending leaders and delegations.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the recommendation was made during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, ahead of the summit’s hosting in Kuala Lumpur.

“The Prime Minister has suggested that private firms operating near the summit routes should permit their staff to work remotely during this period,” he said. “The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will soon announce the main routes to be used by heads of government and state.”

These routes will cover areas around Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTSAAS) in Subang, and the Subang Royal Malaysian Air Force base, including hotels accommodating foreign delegations.

To further reduce traffic pressure, the government has also approved work-from-home policies for relevant public sector departments, while the Ministry of Education will implement online learning (PdPR) for schools located along the main routes.

“The Public Service Department (JPA) has already issued a circular for civil servants, and the Ministry of Education will release the list of affected schools soon,” Fahmi added during his weekly post-Cabinet press conference.

Meanwhile, the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA ’25) is expected to draw record attendance and feature increased defence asset transactions compared to previous years.

Fahmi said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin had briefed Cabinet that both the number of visitors and asset sale agreements were projected to surpass those of LIMA 2023.

“More countries are expected to participate this year, and several major defence asset transactions are anticipated,” Fahmi noted.

LIMA ’25, themed “Today’s Advancement, Tomorrow’s Achievement”, will take place from 20 to 24 May at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Langkawi. The event will showcase innovations in defence, maritime, and aerospace technologies.

More than 10,000 tickets for the public have already been sold, with exhibitors from China, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Italy confirming participation.

LIMA 2023 saw over 600 companies from 30 countries, making it the largest edition since the event’s inception in 1991. - May 7, 2025
