The world of work is going corporate and gaining importance by the hour. I learned during my past tenure as a General Council & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) that professionalism is the expertise a professional has of a certain field. In the workplace, professionalism refers to an individual doing their job with sincerity & genuineness resulting to logical and unbiased decision. In the absence of real professional work ethics, the concepts of “politics” and “mind games” find room to breed.

According to the Father of modern management & preeminent business philosopher, Dr. Peter F. Drucker that “The first responsibility of a professional was spelled out clearly, twenty-five hundred years ago, in the Hipprocratic oath of the Greek physician: Primum non nocere - ‘Above all, not knowingly to do harm.’ No professional, be he accountant, architect, doctor, engineer or lawyer, can promise that he will indeed do good for his client. All he can do is promise that he will not knowingly do harm. And the client, in turn, must be able to trust the professional not knowingly to do him harm." (excerpted from Management, Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices (1974)

I still remember my former boss, Datuk Seri Mohamed Iqbal Rawther, MIM Chairman said, “Professionals must exercise reasonable care and sound judgement to achieve and maintain independence and objectivity in their business related activities. They must never intentionally conceal or misrepresent information or facts relating to recommendations, actions and findings to deceive their clients. In short, professionalism is all about doing right things in the interest of the organisation, profession or business, as the case may be.”

Evidently, my wife Zarina & I consulted with a legal firm in Putrajaya about the status of our property strata title. We were atended by a young professional lawyer who actively listened, carefully examined the facts and communicated effectively in resolving our matter.
