Kuala Lumpur: The government will not fund the construction of a proposed Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) for affluent students, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Rural and regional development minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the establishment of an MRSM college for students from middle 40 (M40) and top 20 (T20) households would be privately funded.

He was responding to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) who asked about the funding for the proposed project.

Earlier this week, Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki mooted the creation of an MRSM college to which students from M40 and T20 households could enrol for a fee. Asyraf said affluent MRSM alumni wanted their children to attend such a college.

Zahid also said the proposed college would not be built on Mara land as such land was meant for the poor.

“We will be collaborating with a few parties to build the college.
