The proposed Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTPA) implementation in Malaysia has raised concerns about its impact on democracy. One key issue is the potential restriction it imposes on the flexibility of the political system. Democracy thrives on adaptability, allowing for responsiveness to changing circumstances and public sentiment. The FTPA, by fixing the parliamentary term, limits the ability to dissolve the parliament at the discretion of the Prime Minister, potentially hindering the democratic process.

Moreover, the FTPA may lead to a lack of accountability. In a dynamic political environment, the ability to call for early elections serves as a crucial check and balance. Without this flexibility, there is a risk that the government might escape accountability for its actions and decisions. This fixed term could provide a shield for politicians to avoid facing the electorate when public dissatisfaction is high.

Additionally, the FTPA might contribute to political stagnation. In a system without the ability to dissolve the parliament, there is less incentive for the ruling party to perform effectively or respond to the needs of the people between elections.

Furthermore, the FTPA may undermine the principle of separation of powers. By restricting the Prime Minister's discretionary power to dissolve the parliament, it could concentrate too much authority in the executive branch, disrupting the delicate balance between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches that is fundamental to a healthy democracy.

Critics argue that a fixed term might not be suitable for diverse countries like Malaysia, where political landscapes can change rapidly. The FTPA could impede the ability to form coalitions or alliances in response to emerging challenges, potentially leading to political instability.

But the timing to propose the Fixed Parliament Term Act in Malaysia clearly raises concerns about potential threats to democratic processes and freedom. The establishment of such a precedent after 65 years may undermine the core principles of democracy, possibly driven by the government's desperation to secure PMX's position following allegations by the government that theres a bid to topple him via a move monikered as Dubai Move. This is still puzzling? Was there such a move or was it just political hype? This shift could have far-reaching implications for political stability and citizen liberties.

What makes matters worse here is that the recent statement by our Law Minister Azalina to validate the proposal for this new law. Azalina's statement suggests the rakyat granted a mandate for a unity government, but it's important to clarify that the king proposed it due to the absence of a clear mandate to any one political parties to form a government. The concept of a unity government involves all parties, without opposition. Azalina should avoid causing confusion, and changing the law to ensure the PM's full term isn't a voter-mandated action.

Elected representatives bear the responsibility of safeguarding the future welfare of the people and the nation. Blindly supporting laws without considering their potential adverse effects can jeopardize the democratic values they are meant to uphold. A true leader should prioritize thoughtful decision-making and avoid implementing laws that may have detrimental consequences in the long run.

In conclusion, while fixed term parliament acts aim to provide stability, their implemehntation in Malaysia raises concerns about their compatibility with the dynamic nature of democracy. The potential risks include reduced flexibility, weakened accountability, political stagnation, and challenges to the separation of powers – all of which could have adverse effects on the democratic fabric of the nation.
