The prosecution in Muhyiddin Yassin’s trial vows to show millions were funnelled to Bersatu’s account, linking the funds to his dual role as party president and prime minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution has vowed to prove that millions of ringgit were channelled to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s trial.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin presented the prosecution’s opening statement on the first day of the trial before High Court judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.
He said evidence will show Muhyiddin had an indirect interest in the Jana Wibawa Programme as both Bersatu president and prime minister at the material time.
“The prosecution acknowledges that the millions of ringgit did not enter the accused’s personal account, but were instead channelled into the account of his ally, Bersatu,” Wan Shaharuddin told the court.
He added that the finance minister at the time acted based on meeting minutes from the accused.
The prosecution will also show the minister did not benefit from the decisions made.
“Similarly, the finance minister at the time, from UMNO, did not gain any benefit,” Wan Shaharuddin stated.
He argued that evidence will prove Bersatu would not have received the contributions without Muhyiddin’s dual roles.
“Evidence will show that if not for the accused being Bersatu president and prime minister at the same time, the party would not have received millions of ringgit in contributions,” he said.
Muhyiddin faces seven charges of power abuse and money laundering.
