
- Scientists have identified eight distinct genetic footprints that account for around 85 per cent of prostate cancer cases.
- The study evaluated tumour tissue samples from 959 men and was published in the journal Nature by the Pan Prostate Cancer Group.
- Four of the uncovered mutational footprints were directly linked to aggressive tumours prone to spreading outside the prostate.
- Other genetic patterns were found to be associated with age and ancestry, including footprints more common in Black men.
- Researchers hope the findings will lead to better screening tests, earlier identification of high-risk cancers, and personalised treatments.
