The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has verified the summons of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's eldest son as part of an ongoing probe into his riches.
According to the New Straits Times, the commission said it handed businessman Mirzan Mahathir a notice to declare all moveable and immovable assets, whether inside or outside the nation, within 30 days.
"The notice was served to him at the MACC headquarters yesterday at approximately 9.30 a.m. under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009, ordering him to declare all of his possessions.
"He must make the declaration within thirty days of receiving the notice.
“This notice is part of MACC's ongoing investigation into him, based on the report and his business activities in connection with the sale and purchase of government-linked companies (GLC).”
MACC stated that it issued the notification in response to "revelations" gathered from the Panama and Pandora Papers.
The Panama Papers were an extraordinary leak of 11.5 million papers from the database of Mossack Fonseca, the world's fourth-largest offshore legal company, in 2016.
Meanwhile, the Pandora Papers contain 12 million leaked papers that disclose the hidden and occasionally immoral or corrupt transactions of the world's wealthy and powerful, including important world leaders, legislators, corporate executives, celebrities, and billionaires.
According to the New Straits Times, former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad lashed out at the government when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) began investigating his son's fortune.
Dr. Mahathir stated that his son had also been threatened with jail. He was frustrated with the legal system and criticized what he saw as a selective investigation. Tun M also questioned the seeming lack of accountability for certain people named in the Pandora Papers.
"This is Reformasi." When they are not in government, they complain about the authorities' oppression. When they are in power, they behave much worse toward their political opponents.
"If you assist them, you become their friend. He wrote that even court processes might be suspended.
At the same time, Dr. Mahathir demanded verification of the claims brought against him, emphasizing the current Prime Minister's lack of evidence.
He stated that he had launched a defamation suit against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, seeking the presentation of proof in court.
"Despite a year has passed since the lawsuit's initiation, no evidence has been presented," the attorney added.
