Protesters killed in Kashmir as elections erupt into violence

• Several protesters were reportedly killed in police firing in Pakistan-administered Kashmir during regional elections on Monday.
• At least 14 people died when security forces allegedly opened fire on supporters of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in Rawalakot.
• The JAAC, a civil rights group, was attempting to march towards the regional capital, Muzaffarabad, demanding subsidised food prices and the abolition of specific legislative assembly seats.
• The dispute escalated after a regional Supreme Court ruling upheld the refugee seats, which the group argues give disproportionate political influence.
• Overall, approximately 40 people have been killed in poll-related violence since early June, leading to the suspension of mobile and internet services and a revision of election dates.
