PROTON’S next move in the compact SUV space is quietly taking shape, and it could arrive sooner than expected.
The upcoming AMA02, part of Proton’s Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) lineup, is now slated to enter production in the fourth quarter of 2026.
While the national carmaker has yet to make a formal announcement, the timeline surfaced through supplier disclosures — most notably from Feytech Holdings Berhad, which recently secured a long-term deal to supply seat components for the model.
Supplier clues point to October rollout
In a recent statement, Feytech confirmed that its subsidiary, Gosford Leather Industries, will handle seat production for the AMA02 under a seven-year contract valued at RM96.8 million.
The company, which has worked with Proton since 2012, indicated that production is expected to begin around October — aligning with earlier supplier hints of a late-year rollout window.
This isn’t the first breadcrumb trail. Earlier in the year, MCE Holdings Berhad also confirmed involvement in a new Proton model, citing a similar contract duration and a production start window between August and October.
A smaller SUV with big ambitions
Industry chatter suggests the AMA02 will take the form of an A-segment compact SUV — a growing category in Malaysia. If true, it would place the model directly against rivals like the Perodua Ativa and Honda WR-V.
There’s also strong speculation that the model could carry the “Saga Cross” nameplate, signalling an expansion of Proton’s long-running Saga lineup beyond its traditional sedan roots.
If it materialises, this would mark Proton’s most affordable SUV offering yet, effectively broadening its reach in the entry-level crossover market.
Familiar engines, with a hybrid twist
Under the hood, the AMA02 is expected to share key components with existing Proton models to keep costs competitive.
This likely includes a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine paired with a conventional automatic transmission — a setup already localised for production.
However, the bigger story could be electrification. The AMA platform was designed from the ground up to support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, and early indications suggest the AMA02 may offer both.
A hybrid variant is widely rumoured to borrow elements from the Proton eMas 7 PHEV, including its dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) system.
Instead of a plug-in setup, the AMA02’s version is expected to use a smaller battery, functioning more like a self-charging hybrid — a move that would position it competitively against newer electrified entrants in the segment.
A strategic expansion for Proton
The AMA02 represents more than just another model launch. It signals Proton’s intent to push further into the lower end of the SUV market while leveraging shared platforms and electrification strategies to stay competitive.
With production edging closer and supplier contracts already locked in, the so-called Saga Cross is shaping up to be one of Proton’s most closely watched launches in recent years. – May 5, 2026
