Proton has big plans for its Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA). The first model based on the revised platform is the new Proton Saga and as it continues to rack up over 70,000 bookings, all eyes have shifted to the second model that is confirmed for a 2026 launch.
The AMA will underpin the replacement of Proton’s previous bread-and-butter PIES (Persona, Iriz, Exora and old Saga) models. While the Saga has been reborn, the remaining three models are all long in the tooth and due for a major refresh. Only the Persona is currently in production but is expected to end this year. The Exora and Iriz have been discontinued.

Plenty of speculation surrounds what is codenamed internally as AMA 02. Some have said it could be a ‘Saga Cross’ in the mould of a replacement Iriz Active. Others have even brought up a new hatchback or MPV.
Proton is determined to reclaim its market share by focussing on models in the sub-RM80,000 segment, essentially where the PIES models reside. The first is the aforementioned AMA 02, which will be followed by the AMA 05 and AMA 06 in 2027.

The only clue Proton has divulged is that the trio will comprise of two SUV or crossovers and a much-needed MPV. It would be safe to assume that something akin to a ‘Saga Cross’ or Iriz Active would perfectly complement an MPV and SUV to take on the Perodua Ativa.
A notable aspect of the AMA is that all models built on the scalable platform will share up to 60% of part. This will allow Proton to drastically reduce development time.

Key to the sharing of parts is the BHE15-based 1.5-litre inline-four naturally-aspirated i-GT engine seen in the new Saga. The highly versatile engine can run at atmospheric pressure as see in the Saga, turbocharged like in the X50 or be adapted for hybrid and plug-in hybrid use (eMas7 PHEV).
The AMA-based models will play a crucial role in Proton achieving its target of 200,000 units in 2026.
