PALAY (unmilled rice) and corn production in the second quarter (Q2) may be higher compared to the same period last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Data showed that production estimates as of May 1 are 4.61 million metric tons (MT), or 5.3 percent higher than the 4.38 million MT in Q2 2025.
However, the figure also marks a 0.8-percent decline from the previous 4.65 million MT as of April 1.
Harvest area
Estimated palay harvest area in Q2 is 1.03 million hectares. This is 5.7 percent more than the 972.82 thousand hectares of actual area in the same period last year.
But palay yield is expected to decline to 4.48 MT per hectare, or 0.4 percent less than the 4.50 MT in 2025.
As of May 1, some 634.91 thousand, or 61.8 percent of the updated harvest area, has been harvested. This is equivalent to 2.91 million MT of palay output.
As for the 621.63 thousand hectares of standing palay as of May 1, 44.5 percent were in the maturing stage; 36.9 percent in the vegetative stage; and 18.6 percent in the reproductive stage.
Of the 864.01 thousand hectares of the perceived areas of farmers’ planting intentions in Q2, about 228.70 thousand hectares, or 26.5 percent, have actually been planted.
Corn
Corn production is seen to reach 1.504 million MT in Q2. This is 0.6 percent higher than the 1.495 million MT in the same period last year.
However, this was 4.1 percent lower than the 1.57 million MT production estimate as of April 1.
Corn harvest areas may increase to 417.03 thousand hectares in Q2, or 3.6 percent more than the 402.66 thousand hectares in the same period last year.
However, yield may decline to 3.61 MT per hectare, or 2.7 percent less than the 3.71 MT in the same quarter last year.
As of May 1, some 239.23 thousand hectares, or 57.4 percent of the updated harvest area, have been harvested. This is equivalent to 916.77 thousand MT of corn.
Of the 737.86 thousand hectares of standing crop as of May 1, about 44.7 percent were in the reproductive stage; 40.5 percent in the vegetative stage; and 14.8 percent in the maturing stage.
Among the 771.94 thousand hectares of the perceived area of farmers’ planting intentions, some 559.78 thousand hectares, or 72.5 percent, have actually been planted. GISELLE JORDAN
