Liverpool were left with a Champions League mountain to climb as Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-0 advantage in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave a dominant PSG a richly-deserved win at the Parc des Princes, and Luis Enrique’s side will travel to Anfield next week in a position of real strength. They were met with good resistance for long periods by a Liverpool side given extra ballast by a bold back-five formation named by Arne Slot – but, in the end, they were unable to hold the array of attacking talent in the home side totally at bay.

All may not be lost for Liverpool, who came from behind to thrash Galatasaray in the second leg of the round of 16. There were mixed returns for Slot’s selection gamble, which included leaving Mohamed Salah on the bench, with the visitors largely unable to create chances and perhaps fortunate that a penalty given for a foul by Ibrahima Konate late on was overturned after consultation with the video assistant referee. They will have to be far more proactive and potent if they hope to progress.

Mamardashvili leaps to the left this time to turn the ball wide after Hakimi takes a shot from range.

Penalty to PSG!

21:31 , Mike Jones

PSG 2-0 Liverpool

70 mins: Zaire-Emery is slipped the ball by Doue as he makes a run into the box.

Ibrahima Konate comes from behind and sticks a leg across the attacker. He wins the ball but nudges Zaire-Emery first.

The referee points to the spot and issues Konate a yellow card.

PSG 2-0 Liverpool

21:28 , Mike Jones

69 mins: The PSG fans are really vocal now. They’re enjoying themselves and having a great time.

Arne Slot isn’t. Now he needs to do something to change the outcome but Liverpool are in a tricky spot.

If they concede again then they are effectively out of the tie.

A goal in their favour though could set up a fine end to the game.

Kvaratskhelia has history with Liverpool

21:27 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Kvaratskhelia has a past with Liverpool.

“He was terrific against them for Napoli - when nicknamed Kvaradona - in 2022.

“Now a goal tonight is another sign of his class.”

GOAL! PSG 2-0 Liverpool (Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, 65')

21:25 , Mike Jones

Easy.

A threaded pass comes through the Liverpool line and into the path of Kvaratskhelia.

He weaves further into the box and touches the ball past Ryan Gravenberch and then the goalkeeper before sidefooting a fine shot into the back of the net.

PSG double their lead!

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:23 , Mike Jones

63 mins: No signs of changes yet as Liverpool have made this second half a lot more difficult for the hosts though they still have had the better of the chances.

Arne Slot seems content with the deficit as it is.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:19 , Mike Jones

60 mins: Frimpong gets some space on the right wing and sends the ball into the box.

It falls to Mac Allister who shoots from just outside the box and rattles a shot at goal.

Willian Pacho blocks the effort and there’s an appeal for handball but the referee isn’t interested.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:16 , Mike Jones

57 mins: Are there signs that Liverpool can get something from this game?

Mo Salah and Alexander Isak were vigorously warming up at half-time. Perhaps changes on the hour mark?

Ekitike is more involved

21:15 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

It has been more open in the second half so far.

“Liverpool may have opened the game up a bit, thinking that being camped in their own third invited too much pressure.

“Certainly Ekitike has been involved more after the break.”

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:13 , Mike Jones

54 mins: Hugo Ekitike, a frustrated man at the top of the pitch for Liverpool, gets off their first shot of the evening but can’t hit the target.

Already Liverpool look like they’re trying to play more on the front foot.

Close!

Kvaratskhelia slips the ball to Mendes who gets into the box. He pulls it back to Dembele who blazes his effort high and wide!

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:10 , Mike Jones

48 mins: Another long throw from Liverpool cause a few issues this time but Safonov is there to punch the ball away.

Still no shots for Liverpool.

Second half! PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:05 , Mike Jones

The host get the ball rolling once again but boot it straight out of play.

HT PSG 1-0 Liverpool

21:01 , Mike Jones

It’s not great reading for Liverpool fans.

PSG had 75% possession in the first half and created eight shots with four on target.

The Reds offered nothing in reply. No shots at all and only four touches inside PSG’s box.

Something needs to change for the second half.

Liverpool have had little threat

20:53 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Liverpool make it to half-time with an xG of 0.00, or no shots.

“They have had little threat.

“PSG have not had many clear-cut chances either but it should be a concern for Liverpool that, despite having five defenders, they have been caught on the counter-attack a few times already.”

Half-time! PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:49 , Mike Jones

45+1 mins: The whistle goes to end the first half and Liverpool will feel okay.

They could have conceded plenty of goals in that half but PSG only have a slim lead.

If Liverpool can get themselves an equaliser then they’ll feel this has been a decent first leg.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:44 , Mike Jones

41 mins: A rapid transition from PSG sees them burst down the left wing before squaring the ball across to Dembele.

He shoots from the right side of the box but can’t beat the goalkeeper with a tame effort.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:40 , Mike Jones

38 mins: Save!

And again from Mamardashvili!

This time a long ball forward plays Nuno Mendes in behind the Liverpool defence and he collects the ball before slipping it inside to Doue.

Doue pokes a shot at goal just as he gets inside the box but Mamardashvili is there to charge him down and make the save.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:38 , Mike Jones

36 mins: I guess Liverpool have done okay so far.

They’re one goal down but they’ve limited PSG’s usual free-flowing nature.

Alexis Mac Allister wins a free kick after a tackle from Hakimi.

Szoboszlai punts it forward but the ball is easily claimed by Safonov.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:36 , Mike Jones

33 mins: Save!

Mamardashvili drops well for Liverpool to deny PSG a second.

He keeps the ball out with a strong right hand after a superb strike from Kvaratskhelia on the right side of the box.

The Georgian snatched at a loose ball and connected superbly but that was a fine stop from the goalkeeper.

Liverpool have limited PSG to one shot on target

20:31 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Liverpool have limited PSG to one shot on target so far.

“Which doesn't necessarily make this a success.

“But tonight is a damage-limitation exercise and while Liverpool have barely seen the ball, they have only conceded to a deflection.”

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:30 , Mike Jones

29 mins: Nuno Mendes has an issue and the game is paused while he receives a bit of treatment.

When the game resumes, Joe Gomez pushes forward and leaps into a challenge for a loose ball.

He gets there first but collides with Doue and the referee awards the hosts a free kick.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:28 , Mike Jones

26 mins: Liverpool’s shape doesn;t seem to be working for them.

They’ve been almost non-existent on the ball and are just sitting back with PSG having free roam of the middle of the pitch.

The hosts have completed 163 passes so far, Liverpool just 44.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:26 , Mike Jones

23 mins: PSG are hunting a second goal.

In a similar way to Doue’s opener, Kvaratskhelia cuts in from the left and hits one only for a block to loop the ball into the air where it is claimed by Mamardashvili.

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:22 , Mike Jones

20 mins: Joe Gomez launches a throw in into the PSG box and wins a corner as Matvei Safonov slaps the ball behind.

Ryan Gravenberch plays it short to Wirtz who feeds it to Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai’s cross is whipped in towards the far post and there are three Liverpool players there but Safonov punches the ball clear before it reaches them!

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:19 , Mike Jones

17 mins: Florian Wirtz finds a bit of space on the right wing after combining with Jeremie Frimpong.

Wirtz looks to cross but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is on hand to block the pass and then win a throw in.

It looks like a long night for Liverpool

20:18 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

It was already looking a long night for Liverpool. Now it looks an even longer one.

“They kept a clean sheet at the Parc des Princes last season. They are a goal down after 11 minutes now.”

PSG 1-0 Liverpool

20:17 , Mike Jones

14 mins: Liverpool need to weather the storm a bit and wrestle some momentum their way. It’s a perfect start for PSG who have clearly been the better and more confident side so far.

GOAL! PSG 1-0 Liverpool (Desire Doue, 11')

20:15 , Mike Jones

There’s the opener!

It’s a deflection that does for Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Ousmane Dembele weaves his way forward then feeds it over to the left for Desire Doue.

Doue spins back on himself and creates half-a-yard from three Liverpool defenders.

He shoots and hits a curling effort which strikes Virgil van Dijk’s leg and loops over the goalkeeper before finishing in the far corner!

PSG take the lead.

PSG 0-0 Liverpool

20:13 , Mike Jones

10 mins: Close!

Liverpool are almost cut apart with a quick move to send the ball up to Ousmane Dembele.

He flicks it across to Desire Doue who cuts onto his left foot and fires a shot at goal only for a backtracking Dominik Szoboszlai to make the black.

PSG 0-0 Liverpool

20:11 , Mike Jones

9 mins: Liverpool are struggling to get themselves on the ball.

Achraf Hakimi gets forward on the right wing and collects a forward pass.

He’s blocked by Joe Gomez and passes the ball back. PSG come again but Liverpool have plenty of bodies behind the ball and win it back on the edge of their own box.

PSG 0-0 Liverpool

20:08 , Mike Jones

6 mins: A tentative start from both teams with PSG getting a bit more joy in the final third as Liverpool get to grips with their new shape.

Joe Gomez is playing on the left side of the back three with Virgil van Dijk on the right.

Vitinha collects the ball and looks for an aerial pass out to the right wing but he overhits it and sends the ball out of play.

PSG 0-0 Liverpool

20:06 , Mike Jones

3 mins: The noise is wonderful inside the Parc des Princes and the PSG fans have brought impressive banners to show their support.

Liverpool's formation

20:04 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

So Joe Gomez is not merely in a back three but on the left of it.

“It is the first time Slot has started with three centre-backs in his time at Liverpool.”

Kick off! PSG 0-0 Liverpool

20:02 , Mike Jones

The atmosphere is bouncing. The PSG fans are really up for this one and the Liverpool contingent are always good value.

PSG are a strong side but if Liverpool click into gear they will be able to challenge them.

Liverpool get the ball rolling and send it back to Ibrahima Konate who boots it over to the left wing where Milos Kerkez struggles to keep it in play.

PSG vs Liverpool

19:55 , Mike Jones

The players head out of the tunnel and the Champions League anthem is played.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool set themselves up with a back three or if Jeremie Frimpong has been preferred to Mo Salah on the right wing.

The first few minutes will make things clearer.

Liverpool’s season has been a tough one for Arne Slot but a victory over the reigning champions in their own back yard will be a big boost for the remainder of the campaign.

Warm ups done and dusted

19:50 , Mike Jones

The warm-ups are all done and next up the players will be making their way out onto the pitch.

This is a big game for Liverpool. They need to make sure they’re still in the tie for the return leg at Anfield.

Playmaker

19:45 , Mike Jones

Florian Wirtz has created 27 chances from open play in nine Champions League games for Liverpool.

The most by a player in their first 10 games for a club in the competition (on record since 2003-04) is 32 by Mesut Özil for Real Madrid, while Wirtz’s total is already the most on record by a player for an English club through 10 appearances.

Attacking from the back

19:40 , Mike Jones

Achraf Hakimi has five assists in nine Champions League games for PSG this season.

The Moroccan is now the only defender in the competition’s history to assist 5+ goals in multiple editions, and has achieved that in back-to-back campaigns (5 in 2024-25).

Kvaratskhelia's form

19:30 , Mike Jones

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been directly involved in 11 goals in 11 games in the Champions League this season (7 goals, 4 assists).

It is already the joint-second most by a PSG player in a single edition (level with Kylian Mbappé from 2020-21), and trailing only Ousmane Dembélé from last season (14 in 15 games).

A record night

19:25 , Mike Jones

PSG are unbeaten in their last seven knockout stage matches in the Champions League and could equal the longest run by a French side in the competition (8 by Lyon – April 2004-March 2006).

The holders curse?

19:20 , Mike Jones

In four of the last five Champions League editions, the holders have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage (Bayern Munich 2020-21, Chelsea 2021-22, Manchester City 2023-24 and Real Madrid 2024-25), with only Real Madrid in 2022-23 managing to progress to the semi-finals.

PSG vs English clubs

19:15 , Mike Jones

PSG are unbeaten in their last six Champions League games against English sides (five wins, one draw).

They have progressed from all four of their knockout stage ties against English opponents since the start of last season (v Liverpool, Aston Villa, Arsenal & Chelsea).

Missing the target

19:10 , Mike Jones

In last season’s round of 16 tie between these two sides, Liverpool averaged just 38.6% possession and had 14 fewer shots on target than opponents PSG across the two legs (4 for, 18 against).

It was their biggest negative shot on target differential in a Champions League knockout stage tie on record (since 2003-04).

Liverpool ready for action

19:08 , Mike Jones

The Liverpool players have arrived at the Parc des Princes ahead of this crucial tie.

Can they take an advantage back to Anfield?

19:05 , Mike Jones

PSG and Liverpool have met on six previous occasions in European competition, with both sides registering three wins each.

Their most recent meetings came in the Champions League last season, where both won 1-0 away from home in the round of 16, before the Parisians won on a penalty shootout at Anfield to progress (4-1).

Liverpool dressing room still believes in Arne Slot

19:00 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Florian Wirtz has insisted the Liverpool team still believe in head coach Arne Slot, despite their struggles this season and the sense many supporters want the Dutchman sacked.

Liverpool have lost 15 games in all competitions, are 21 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and crashed out of the FA Cup 4-0 to Manchester City on Saturday when captain Virgil van Dijk admitted he thought the side gave up.

A back three for Liverpool?

18:57 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

There have been suggestions that, for the first time in his reign, Arne Slot will play a back three tonight and the teamsheet certainly makes it look possible, with Joe Gomez in.

“Although he could be at right-back with Jeremie Frimpong on the right wing.

“What is definitely true is that Mohamed Salah is dropped. Which, on the basis of his display against Manchester City on Saturday, makes sense but still underlines his decline.

“A year ago, when he came to Paris, it was as a potential Ballon d'Or winner. Now it is as a substitute.”

Slot on facing PSG again

18:42 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot enjoyed this fixture last season despite Liverpool ultimately being beaten.

Ahead of the rematch tonight he said: "It's only about two games and a lot can happen in two games. I think both teams have very good players and both were able to show that when we went toe-to-toe last season.

"They're champions of Europe - fully deserved – and they kept the team together.

“Usually, the longer you keep a team together, the better they become, if that is even possible because they were so impressive last season."

Will Alexander Isak feature?

18:36 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot gave a positive update on Liverpool’s missing striker who could make his return to the team tonight.

The head coach said: "He finished close to a week of team training sessions, so he can play a part.

“We think we can get a performance out of him now, but not [ready] to start."

Arne Slot calls on Liverpool to draw on rich history to overcome mammoth PSG test

18:30 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Arne Slot insisted Liverpool can draw on their rich history to give them hope in the troubled times of this season and said that every time they fall over, they can get back on their feet.

Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday after losing their last two games and 15 matches in all competitions, with Slot saying: “It is completely true that performances and results have been inconsistent the whole season.”

We've shown we are good in big games

18:24 , Mike Jones

Liverpool’s season hasn’t gone the way they would have liked but Florian Wirtz still believes they can achieve something special this year.

He said: "We have shown this season we are good in big games. Especially in Champions League games. The last round against Galatasaray was not easy, they are a good team [but we won].

“We have the second game at home which is maybe an advantage. We will try to do our best, believe in ourselves and get a good result to take to Anfield."

Champions League games are always special

18:18 , Mike Jones

Florian Wirtz is looking forward to tonight’s encounter and hopes Liverpool can make it through this round.

He said: "It's a very big competition, Champions League games are always special. We'll try to enjoy it, to go as far as possible and hopefully come through this round.

“We know it's difficult because the best teams in the world are playing in the Champions League but it's good to play against these teams and see where you are."

It will be no different

18:12 , Mike Jones

Here’s a final word from the PSG coach who said: "We hope to have more of the ball than Liverpool, but we know how difficult it is, because they are a very good team with a very good coach.

“We are used to playing against English teams, so in that sense it will be no different from last year."

PSG's squad is important

18:06 , Mike Jones

Luis Enrique also spoke about the importance of having all his squad players playing to the best of their ability and named dropped a couple who could make a difference across the two legs.

"A team that wants to win all the trophies needs players like Gonçalo Ramos or Kang-In Lee who help the team at any time ,” Enrique said.

“These are very difficult players to find, they are very important to try to win what we want."

Why the sequel to Arne Slot’s favourite tie could spell doom for Liverpool

18:00 , Richard Jolly

For a year and more, Arne Slot has often harked back to what he frequently describes as the best tie has been involved in.

“My football is Paris Saint-Germain v Liverpool, Liverpool v Paris Saint-Germain,” he said in January. Now he gets to relive and revisit it.

If sequels can be worse than the original, this threatens to be more painful; for Slot, anyway.

Why the sequel to Arne Slot’s favourite tie could spell doom for Liverpool

It's impossible to have a favourite

17:54 , Mike Jones

Paris Saint-Germain head coach, Luis Enrique, says that the match-up between his team and Liverpool is so close it is impossible for one to be favourites over the other.

"It doesn't matter who the favourites are, because in this type of match, it's impossible to have a favourite,” he told the media ahead of tonight’s match.

“I don't believe we are. Last year, everyone said it was Liverpool and we qualified. The first leg last season was a very, very high-level match.

“I would sign up for the same match but not for the same result."

When is PSG v Liverpool?

17:48 , Mike Jones

The Champions League first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool is at 8pm BST on Wednesday 8 April at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France.

Viewers in the UK can watch the match on TNT Sports 1 with coverage starting at 7pm BST. It will also be streamed on HBO Max.

'We hope Ekitike is not on top form'

17:42 , Mike Jones

More from Vitinha who spoke about the return of former PSG striker, Hugo Ekitike, who is likely to feature for Liverpool tonight.

"He's a fantastic guy, I really enjoyed the year with him. He has a lot of qualities,” Vitinha said.

“Unfortunately it didn't quite work out for him [at Paris], but he's turned things around in his favour.

“We hope he's not feeling at top form but I wish him all the best... except for these two matches."

Liverpool still a great team

17:36 , Mike Jones

PSG midfielder, Vitinha, says that tonight’s encounter with Liverpool will be different to last season’s knockout tie which was won by the French club.

He said: “This is going to be a very different match from last season [in the round of 16]. We had more chances [in the first leg], but Alisson made a lot of saves.

“There was a bit of frustration at the end, but we told ourselves that by playing like that we could progress, and we did.

“Today, it's a different season with changes in both teams. Even if Liverpool's current form isn't ideal, they're still a great team with great players."

Liverpool clear underdogs ahead of massive PSG clash

17:30 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Luis Enrique claimed it was “impossible” there was a favourite in a rematch between Paris-Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

Others would disagree. A year ago, Liverpool, top of the Premier League, winners of the Champions League’s group phase, went to the Parc des Princes with that status.

Now they may have finished eight places ahead of PSG in the league phase but there is no doubt they are underdogs, and not merely because the French champions have shed their tag as the tragicomic underachievers of continental competitions.

Liverpool's record after going behind this season

17:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool have conceded the opening goal in 18 games in all competitions this season but have managed to come from behind just twice.

In total, 14 of those games have ended in defeat and there have been two draws after Liverpool have gone behind.

Following the capitulation at Manchester City, it feels as if it is imperative that Liverpool do not concede the opening goal tonight.

PSG, meanwhile, have scored at least three goals in 19 of their games this season. The European champions know how to rack up a score.

Have Liverpool given up?

16:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Virgil van Dijk apologised to Liverpool supporters after the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday and said the season has been “mentally very tough” for last year’s Premier League champions.

“Today our second half, the intensity we didn’t match, the challenges we didn’t win, it was tough. To lose then 4-0 is tough,” Van Dijk said.

It came after Dominik Szoboszlai accused Liverpool of lacking fighting spirit. “The mentality wasn't there enough,” he said. “None of us were there to be honest as much as we could.”

Florian Wirtz: Liverpool dressing room still believes in Arne Slot

16:10 , Richard Jolly, in Paris

Florian Wirtz has insisted the Liverpool team still believe in head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool have lost 15 games in all competitions, are 21 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and crashed out of the FA Cup 4-0 to Manchester City on Saturday when captain Virgil van Dijk admitted he thought the side gave up.

But Wirtz feels they are still playing for Slot and said his achievement in winning the Premier League last year and a series of major matches in the current campaign proves they ought to have confidence in him.

“Yes, of course we are believing in the manager,” said the £100m signing. “The team should believe in the manager because they won the league last season. We had a lot of good games this season and we wanted it to be better.

“We still have things to play for and everything I can see is we believe in the manager.”

Liverpool's season on the line?

15:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Amid the alarming nature of their performance and some eye-catching quotes in the post-match debrief, the reality of Liverpool’s humiliation at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday was that hopes of winning a trophy this season are now done to the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah will be desperate to sign off his Liverpool career with a fourth Champions League final but a dream Budapest send-off would appear to be unlikely based on current form. If Liverpool do somehow get past PSG in the quarter-finals they would face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Alexander Isak set to give Liverpool boost from bench

Arne Slot said Liverpool’s record signing Alexander Isak could make his belated first appearance of 2026 at the Parc des Princes, though it would only be as a substitute.

Isak broke a leg while scoring against Tottenham in December and has undergone ankle surgery and is likely to be on the bench.

“He has finished close to a week of team training sessions so he can play a part, otherwise I wouldn’t take him,” Slot said.

I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we felt we could not get a performance of him yet.”

Arne Slot's message ahead of PSG rematch

Arne Slot insisted Liverpool can draw on their rich history to give them hope in the troubled times of this season and said that every time they fall over, they can get back on their feet.

Liverpool have lost 15 matches in all competitions this season and appear to be huge underdogs for tonight’s tie and was Slot asked how he would give supporters hope ahead of a daunting test.

“The answer lies in the history of Liverpool. In tough moments, they stand up again. We've had a lot of tough moments, stood up a few times then fallen down again.

"We have to show that mentality again to keep going and keep picking yourself up after disappointment.”

What is the Liverpool team news?

Liverpool are still without Alisson, so Giorgi Mamardashvili continues to deputise. Jeremie Frimpong could replace Joe Gomez at right back while Alexander Isak has travelled to Paris and could offer Liverpool a boost from the bench by making his first appearance of 2026.

Possible XI: Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitike

Liverpool are in need of another miracle in Paris as they head to the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against PSG.

A year on from Alisson’s saves and Harvey Elliott’s winner, the Reds arrive in France with their season on the line following Saturday’s dismal defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

PSG are the Champions League holders and Luis Enrique’s side destroyed Chelsea in the last-16. With the pressure turning up on Arne Slot, can Liverpool avoid their season going from bad to worse?

Can they take something back to Anfield? We’ll have all the build-up between now and 8pm.
