THE Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) has nominated Bawani KS as its candidate for the upcoming Ayer Kuning State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election.
PSM Chairman Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, made the announcement during a candidate's certificate presentation ceremony at the party’s Operations Room in Perak earlier today.
Bawani, who is also PSM’s Deputy Secretary-General, is a local from the Ayer Kuning constituency. She pledged to bring an alternative voice to the table, stating, “PSM is contesting to bring the people’s alternative voice to be heard.”
Bawani has a strong background in activism, having served as the Welfare Committee Member at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and has been actively involved in grassroots community organising with the Community Development Centre (CDC).
She is widely recognised for her viral “Listen, Listen, Listen” video, which captured her bold questioning of a facilitator during a Q&A session at a university event aimed at addressing political engagement among students.
A practising lawyer, Bawani previously contested in the 2018 Perak State Election, where she was defeated by Pakatan Harapan’s candidate, Leong Cheok Keng.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional announced the candidacy of Mohamad Yusri Bakir, the Secretary of the Tapah UMNO Division, as their candidate for the by-election.
The Ayer Kuning by-election is being held following the passing of its former incumbent, Allahyarham Ishsam Shahruddin, who was also the Tapah UMNO Division Chief, due to a heart attack on 22 February.
The Ayer Kuning constituency has 31,897 registered voters, comprising 31,315 regular voters and 582 police personnel and their spouses. The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for 26 April, with nomination day on 12 April and early voting on 22 April. - April 8, 2025
