PFA is one of the vital tools in delivering psychological interventions to those who have undergone or experience traumatic events. Traumatic experiences during calamities, outbreaks or infectious, and war can induce a significant amount of stress in the absence of early and effective intervention provided by trained caregivers. According to Professor Dr. Roselina Ahmad Saufi, FCMI, the Vice Chancellor & CEO of Universiti Malaya Wales, that “FTA is critical in ensuring the psychological recovery of people affected by disasters. PFA is a trainable group of skills applied to limit distress & maladaptive behaviors that could negatively impact the rehabilitation of people from a traumatic experience. PFA is essential in enhancing the mental, emotional, and spiritual recovery of patients.”

Professor Roselina graced the opening of UM-Wales online workshop on “What is PFA & Essential Concepts” for senior officers of the City Government of Isabela de Basilan, under the leadership of Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin Hataman. The two facilitators were Dean Vishalini, Faculty of Human Humanistic and Applied Science (PHAS), and Program Manager Dr. Ahmad Syihan, who focused on Rahmah (Mercy) in Action: The First Responder Framework, as the core steps for providing immediate, effective PFA. In the Holy Quran, rahmah represents the all-encompassing divine concern for humanity, reflected, in divine revelation of Prophet Muhammad PBUH is called “a reflection of mercy for the worlds” and the kindness of heart that ought to characterize human conduct.

In fielding to my question on the First Responder Framework, Dean Vishalini, said “LOOK is for observing safety, identifying distress, recognizing immediate needs & deciding when support may be required. LISTEN is approaching someone sensitively, active listening, asking helpful questions, calming and grounding skills. LINK by identifying the practical needs, strengthening social support, connecting people with appropriate resources and knowledge when professional referral is needed. So, PFA is critical in delivering psychological interventions to survivors of a disaster or calamity.”
