‘Psychopathic’ fraudster claimed he was ex-Navy multi-millionaire with cancer

  • Joseph Gibson, 35, has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison at Bristol Crown Court after pleading guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation for swindling four victims out of almost £70,000.
  • The serial fraudster fabricated elaborate lies to manipulate his victims, including falsely claiming he had cancer, was injured by a bomb in the Royal Navy and was a multi-millionaire worth over £440m.
  • Gibson targeted two women via the dating app Tinder, sending staged photographs of himself in hospital beds to trick them into taking out loans and credit card debt to pay for pretend medical treatments and luxury goods.
  • His victims suffered severe financial and emotional harm, with one woman losing over £21,000 and another describing him in court as a con artist who broke her as a person.
  • Gibson will next appear in court for a hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act, to recover his assets to repay his victims, in March.
