Govt to strengthen PTPTN loan repayment efforts amid RM10.7b arrears

PETALING JAYA: National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers have accumulated RM10.7 billion in repayment arrears involving 1.16 million borrowers as of Aug 31, 2026, the Higher Education Ministry said.

In a written parliamentary reply, the ministry said various initiatives had been implemented and would continue to be introduced to ensure the long-term sustainability of PTPTN’s funding model, including strengthening loan management and improving repayment collection.

It said the terms and conditions of loans would be enhanced to better target those in need, taking into account PTPTN’s financial capacity.

The government would also improve the effectiveness and efficiency of loan repayment collection through enforcement measures and strategic cooperation with government agencies and corporate entities.

“However, the government remains concerned about borrowers who are genuinely facing difficulties in making loan repayments,” it said.

The ministry said PTPTN remained open to borrowers facing financial difficulties to come forward for consultation and subsequently restructure their repayment plans according to their financial capabilities.

Borrowers may also apply for a deferment of repayment, subject to the flexibility allowed by PTPTN.

The reply was in response to a question from Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu), who asked the Higher Education Minister to state the latest amount of PTPTN borrowers’ debt and the measures being taken to improve loan repayments.
