Islamic preacher and humanitarian activist Rahmat Ikhsan, better known as PU Rahmat, has publicly apologised for a joke he made involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Solidarity Gathering for Gaza held recently.
The 32-year-old preacher took to his social media accounts on Wednesday to express regret over his remarks, admitting that his words may have been inappropriate despite being made in a lighthearted context.
“I apologise if my joke about being ‘fellow inmates’ was inappropriate,” PU Rahmat wrote.
“PMX himself made the same kind of joke with me, so I took it in a humorous spirit — but I understand that it may not have been suitable in that setting.”

The incident occurred during the Himpunan Solidariti Bersama Gaza at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, where various Malaysian public figures and activists gathered to show support for Palestine. PU Rahmat was among several speakers invited to deliver a speech on unity, compassion, and resilience.
Following mixed reactions online, PU Rahmat clarified that he had no intention of offending anyone especially the Prime Minister and acknowledged the importance of being more mindful in public speaking.
“Sometimes we have to learn from PMX himself, who has a great sense of humour,” he added.
“But I’ve also learned to be more careful about the kind of jokes I make, even when it’s meant in good fun.”
The preacher’s humility and willingness to apologise earned him praise from many netizens, who commended his maturity in handling the matter. Others noted that his interaction with the Prime Minister reflected PM Anwar’s approachable and good-natured personality, often known for his ability to engage warmly with the public.
The Solidarity Gathering for Gaza brought together thousands of Malaysians united in empathy and advocacy for the Palestinian cause and despite the brief controversy, the event’s overall message of peace, unity, and humanity remained at the heart of the night.
