In a resounding victory, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition has successfully defended its two-thirds majority in Parliament by securing a significant win in the Pulai parliamentary seat in Johor. Additionally, in the Simpang Jeram state seat, PH emerged victorious with a comfortable margin.
PH candidate Suhaizan Kayat secured a substantial lead, with more than 80% of the ballot papers counted at the vote tallying center. The unofficial result for Pulai, after tallying 228 out of 297 channels, revealed that PH garnered an impressive 36,703 votes. On the other hand, Perikatan Nasional (PN) obtained 24,035 votes, resulting in a substantial majority of 12,668. The PN candidate in Pulai gracefully conceded defeat.
Simpang Jeram, considered PN’s prime opportunity to secure a seat in the Johor by-election, was strategically located near PN chief Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s base in Pagoh. This constituency also boasted a higher Malay voter demographic, at nearly 52%.
Despite a lower overall voter turnout, PH's performance in Pulai remained unaffected. The Election Commission (EC) attributed the lower turnout to heavy rainfall, with Pulai experiencing a 46% turnout compared to the 60% turnout in Simpang Jeram.
This victory holds significant implications for the local society. With PH retaining its two-thirds majority in Parliament, it signifies a continued mandate for their policies and agenda. This mandate empowers the coalition to pursue meaningful reforms, focusing on areas such as education, healthcare, and economic development. Additionally, it reinforces the electorate's confidence in PH's ability to govern effectively, fostering stability and progress in the region.
Noteworthy figures within the Amanah party, including President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Johor party chief Aminolhuda Hassan, gathered with supporters at Dataran Taman Dahlia in Perling to witness and celebrate the latest unofficial by-election results. Their presence underscores the party's commitment to transparent and inclusive democratic processes. This victory is not just a win for PH, but a win for the principles of democracy and representation in Malaysia.
