Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, in a lighthearted manner, expressed his disapproval of voting for Pakatan Harapan's candidate Suhaizan Kayat for the Pulai parliamentary seat, labeling it as "haram" or sinful. The statement was made during a Perikatan ceramah held in Taman Kempas on Saturday night, eliciting laughter from the crowd.
Muhyiddin jokingly anticipated the possibility of someone challenging him to cite the religious basis for his remark. Nonetheless, he stressed his stance that voters should refrain from giving any support to Suhaizan, the former speaker of Johor. The Pagoh MP asserted that if Pakatan were to secure victory in the upcoming Sept 9 by-election for the Pulai parliamentary seat, it would enable the Unity Government to maintain its two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament).
This majority would grant them the ease of making constitutional amendments, which includes the redelineation of electoral boundaries that occurs every eight years. To emphasize the potential impact of this situation, Muhyiddin suggested that they plan on increasing the current 222-seat Parliament by an additional 78 seats, resulting in a total of 300 seats. He expressed concern over the loss of governing authority, emphasizing the marginalized status of the Malay community, who constitute the majority and are now in the Opposition. According to Muhyiddin, this presents a challenging and precarious situation.
The Pulai parliamentary seat by-election and Simpang Jeram state seat by-election were scheduled following the passing of the former Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who held the positions of MP and assemblyman for the respective seats. In the by-election, Pakatan's candidate Suhaizan is facing competition from Perikatan's Zulkifli Jaafar and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi.
The Pulai constituency consists of a mixed demographic, with Malays comprising 44.18% of the total 166,653 registered voters, followed by the Chinese (40.46%), Indians (12.31%), and other ethnic groups (3.06%). During the 15th General Election held in November of the previous year, Salahuddin successfully defended the Pulai seat, securing 64,900 votes and a majority of 33,174 against Barisan Nasional-Umno's candidate Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (31,726 votes) and Loh Kah Yong from Perikatan-Gerakan (20,677 votes).
