THE official inauguration of the 1,200 MW Pulau Indah Power Plant (PIPP) marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s energy transition, underlining the nation’s commitment to sustainable growth and energy security, Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof, announced today.
Delivering the keynote speech at the inauguration ceremony, Fadillah said: “This achievement not only highlights the capacity to deliver a large-scale energy project under the leadership of a state government, but it also affirms the strength of collaboration between the state and federal governments, joining forces to deliver progress for the nation.”
The Pulau Indah Power Plant is one of Malaysia’s most advanced combined cycle gas turbine plants, designed to provide high-efficiency and lower emissions power generation. Dato’ Sri Fadillah described the plant as a “long-term stabiliser,” crucial for ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to homes, industries, and critical services, thereby bolstering investor confidence and economic resilience.
“Energy security is no longer just a utility concern; it is a pillar of Malaysia’s economic resilience, reinforcing national growth on the global stage, and projecting confidence to investors, both local and international,” he said.
The inauguration reflects Phase 1 of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), aiming to phase down coal reliance, boost efficiency, and lay foundations for expanding solar, hydro, and hydrogen energy sources.
The project embodies Malaysia’s commitment to building a cleaner, more inclusive, and future-ready energy system, creating more than 23,000 high-quality jobs in emerging sectors such as solar, hydrogen, and energy efficiency.
Highlighting a “new social contract on energy,” Fadillah stressed the importance of equitable and sustainable energy development that benefits all Malaysians and safeguards the environment for future generations.
Fadillah expressed his gratitude to the Selangor State Government, led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and the project’s developer, Pulau Indah Power Plant Sdn Bhd, along with key shareholder Worldwide Holdings Berhad, for their instrumental roles.
He also acknowledged the participation of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), whose 25 per cent equity stake represents Korea’s inaugural investment in a Malaysian power plant.
“Energy security is no longer just a utility concern; it is a pillar of Malaysia’s economic resilience, reinforcing national growth on the global stage, and projecting confidence to investors, both local and international,” he said.
Highlighting a “new social contract on energy,” Fadillah stressed the importance of equitable and sustainable energy development that benefits all Malaysians and safeguards the environment for future generations.
The Deputy Prime Minister also praised the exemplary federal-state cooperation model demonstrated in the project, emphasising how clear governance and public-private partnerships can deliver impactful infrastructure.
Beyond Pulau Indah, he encouraged continued innovation and investment in renewable energy, citing the role of Worldwide Holdings Berhad and the Selangor State Government in advancing Malaysia’s renewable energy ambitions through initiatives such as solar leasing and capacity building for a low-carbon future.
“The road to energy transformation is not always easy, but it is the road that leads to a stronger Malaysia,” he added. “With the Pulau Indah Power Plant now fully operational, we are not just meeting capacity. We are reimagining what Malaysia can become. We are no longer just powering homes, we are powering possibilities.” - September 30, 2025
