Last weekend, my family and I set sail for a day trip to Pulau Ketam, or "Crab Island," nestled off the coast of Klang in Selangor, Malaysia, before heading to KL for the New Year's Eve Countdown. There are many homestays in Pulau Ketam, but we opted for a day trip before continuing our journey to KL. Join me as I recount our unforgettable adventure, offering you a glimpse into the vibrant colors, savory flavors, and heartwarming moments that define Pulau Ketam.

Journey to the Past

I'm taking the earlier ferry, which departs at 8:30 am. Journey to the Past Our voyage commenced with a delightful 38-minute ferry ride from Port Klang South Port Passenger Terminal aboard Alibaba Cruise, a charming ferry with clean and comfortable seats. The affordable round-trip tickets—RM20 for adults and RM12 for children—opened the gateway to a world where time seemed to slow down. As Pulau Ketam unfolded before us, anticipation filled the air, setting the stage for a journey back in time. (For more information about Alibaba Cruise and fares, you can visit Alibaba Cruise).

Exploring the Unique Charm

Choosing to rent an RM40 electric bicycle added a touch of magic to our adventure as we glided through the narrow lanes of Pulau Ketam. The absence of cars allowed the villagers to move gracefully on bicycles or by foot, creating a scene that felt like stepping into a painting. As we rode along, the vibrant hues of the houses and the quaint stilt structures formed a captivating masterpiece, leaving us genuinely awe-struck by the island's distinctive charm. It was this part of our journey that filled my heart with the purest joy.

Culinary Delights

Culinary Delights Amidst our exploration, the aroma of freshly prepared seafood guided us to Restoran Jia Jia Restaurant. There, we savored a delightful feast of salted egg crabs and other mouthwatering dishes. The prices were reasonable and more affordable compared to those in the city. For more information about Restoran Jia Jia, you can visit their Facebook page.

Although we were already quite full, the locals insisted that we must try the famous curry noodles, so we made our way to the recommended stall nearby the school. You can ask anyone about the stall; the locals are friendly and helpful. Following their recommendation, the irresistible aroma guided us to the humble stall, where we decided to save the experience for later. Pulau Ketam's famous curry noodles would have to wait for our return visit.

Before heading back, we treated ourselves to potato twisters from a nearby stall for an affordable RM4, adding a delightful touch to our culinary adventure on Pulau Ketam. Additionally, we took the opportunity to shop for some local seafood products and snacks. The offerings looked fresh and tempting, providing a perfect memento of our memorable visit

A Step Back in Time

In today's fast-paced world, Pulau Ketam provides a unique haven. Stepping onto the island feels like a journey back to the ‘70s/’80s, a time when life moved at a more leisurely pace. The tranquility enveloping Pulau Ketam acts as a soothing balm for the modern soul, offering a rare opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle, if only for a day.

Farewell to Pulau Ketam

Having satisfied our taste buds and hearts, we bid a reluctant adieu to Pulau Ketam, returning to the ferry. The day had been a perfect blend of serenity, seafood indulgence, and cherished family moments, leaving us with memories to last a lifetime.

Pulau Ketam stands as a testament to the beauty of simplicity, offering a serene escape for those seeking respite from the daily grind. With its unique and colorful stilt houses, delectable seafood, and the calming embrace of a bygone era, this pristine island in Selangor is undoubtedly a must-visit hidden gem for both locals and tourists alike. Our day on Pulau Ketam was a journey not just through the island's lanes but through time itself—a brief yet memorable retreat that left an indelible mark on our hearts.
