Pulau Sibuan set to reopen on Jan 15 after bomb scare 

PULAU Sibuan will reopen on January 15 after authorities cleared remnants of an unexploded bomb found on its shores.

The bomb was neutralised by navy divers on January 11.

The island was closed on January 7 when Sabah Parks coast guards spotted the old ordnance while patrolling a snorkelling area.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the closure was necessary to ensure visitors’ safety.

“We acted swiftly to avoid any risks to tourists and staff. Thankfully, the Royal Malaysian Navy successfully destroyed the bomb,” she said in a statement in Kota Kinabalu, today.

Liew assured that the popular island will be safe for tourists once it reopens.

“We’ve done everything needed to secure the island. Visitors can return with peace of mind,” she added.

Other islands in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, including Bohey Dulang and Mantabuan, remained open throughout the incident. – January 13, 2025.
