In a major political development after the civic body and Nagar panchayat polls in the state, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Punar Surjit (a breakaway faction of Shiromani Akali Dal) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may head for a possible alliance ahead of ensuing Assembly elections.

However, the Punar Surjit leaders are tight lipped about the development. Source said that the BJP leadership had established contact with the Punar Surjit leaders after the West Bengal elections.

Sources said that they asked the Punar Surjit leaders to discuss the issues of Punjab with them.

Sources in both parties said that the meetings were planned a few times but could not be organised. Now, the efforts have been revised.

Punar Surjit senior leader Gurpartap Wadala said they are willing to meet anyone to discuss the issues of Punjab for the betterment of the state.

He said there is no direct talk of alliance yet and the Punar Surjit will take opinion of Punjabis before taking any political decision.

On the other hand, party spokesperson Jagjit Singh Kohli said there was no formal meeting has taken place amongst the leaders.

If the party leaders did meet with the BJP leaders, it must have been in their personal capacity.
