Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains conducted a surprise inspection of cleanliness arrangements in Amritsar during the wee hours of Tuesday. The minister toured the walled city and adjoining areas for nearly two-and-a-half to three hours, reviewing sanitation operations and assessing the ground situation.

During the inspection, which continued until around 1 am, Bains examined the functioning of cleaning staff and sanitation machinery on major roads and in key parts of the city. Sharing a video of the visit on social media, he announced that a special night-time cleaning drive would now be undertaken in Amritsar.

Under the initiative, roads and major routes will be cleaned daily from 10 pm to 2 am. The objective is to ensure that devotees arriving in the early morning hours to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib find the city clean and welcoming.

Describing the exercise as the beginning of a larger campaign, Bains said the night sanitation drive would be further strengthened in the coming days. He also announced that he would carry out surprise inspections on any night of the week to monitor the effectiveness of the initiative and ensure sustained improvements in cleanliness.

Later in the morning, a separate review exercise was conducted by the minister from 8 am onwards. Accompanied by local legislators, the Mayor, the Municipal Commissioner, and other officials, Bains undertook a ground-level assessment of sanitation arrangements in different parts of the city under the Mission Clean Punjab campaign.

During the morning visit, he interacted with residents to seek suggestions on improving civic cleanliness and inspected the door-to-door garbage collection system. The minister said the government’s cleanliness mission would be driven by direct public engagement, with officials working among people in streets, neighbourhoods, and markets rather than limiting themselves to office-based reviews.

He said public feedback would remain central to the success of Mission Clean Punjab and that regular field inspections would help ensure accountability and better sanitation services across Amritsar.
