Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the Punjab government will launch a massive campaign starting Friday to eliminate stray and killer dogs that endanger the lives of children and pedestrians.
Estimates by the state’s veterinary and research institutions indicate that there are approximately 5.19 lakh stray dogs in Punjab, prompting urgent government action.
Under the plan, municipal corporation commissioners and the additional deputy commissioners would be asked to take immediate, coordinated and result-oriented action to effectively tackle the growing issue of stray dogs across Punjab.
Officially, the unchecked population growth of stray dogs is largely due to a lack of systematic sterilisation and improper waste management, which provides easy access to food sources.
