KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP vice-chairperson Datuk Jannie Lasimbang (pic) has renewed her call to end child marriage in Sabah, urging immediate action on long-delayed legal reforms.

Jannie Lasimbang, who is also former Kapayan assemblywoman, said a comprehensive 10-year programme to amend Native and Syariah laws was developed during her tenure as Assistant Law and Native Affairs Minister from 2018 to 2020 but was never implemented by the previous state government.

She said amendments to the Native Court Enactment addressing child marriage have been approved by the Attorney General’s Chambers for more than five years, but remain stalled at the Cabinet level.

Jannie urged the Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Ministry to approve the amendments, strengthen training for Native Court personnel, and continue supporting NGO-led awareness programmes in high-risk rural communities across Sabah.
