Puteri Umno distances itself from viral Threads post

PUTERI Umno Malaysia has distanced itself from a controversial Threads post by its information chief, stressing that the remarks were made in a personal capacity and did not reflect the movement’s position.

Puteri Umno executive committee member Nor Zakiah Azmi said the post was made through a personal account and should not be associated with the organisation.

“What happened does not represent Puteri Umno. I hope this matter will not be prolonged and that it can serve as a lesson for all parties,” she said in a statement today.

She said Puteri Umno remained committed to upholding discipline and protecting the movement’s image, while urging members to exercise greater care when expressing their views on social media.

The clarification followed criticism from Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Malaysia over the post, which it claimed used defamatory and insulting language against Nurul Izzah Anwar, including references to sexual allegations.

AMK executive committee member Atillah Sani said political differences should not be a licence for personal attacks or for private matters to be used as political weapons.

“This is no longer about who supports which party, but about dignity, decency and responsibility in politics,” she said.

Atillah said party leaders and those holding positions in political wings should demonstrate maturity and discipline in their public communication rather than resorting to personal attacks.

She said AMK would lodge a police report over the post and leave the matter to the authorities to investigate and take any appropriate action under the law.

The controversy involves Puteri Umno information chief Shamellya Norazizi, whose Threads post reportedly linked Nurul Izzah to an allegation of sodomy.

AMK said it would not remain silent when a person’s dignity was made the subject of political attacks, arguing that political differences should be debated on policies and ideas rather than personal matters. - September 4, 2026
