Vladimir Putin has told Iran to be “restrained” in its retaliation against Israel, following the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The Russian president advised against attacks on Israeli civilians, two senior Iranian sources told Reuters. The Russian leader’s message comes as the Middle East anxiously awaits Iran’s response to the Hamas leader’s killing which it has blamed on Israel.

On Tuesday, Hamas announced Yahya Sinwar, who heads the Gaza region and masterminded the October 7 attacks, as Haniyeh’s successor.

Elsewhere, reports claimed that Iranian-backed Lebanese militants, Hezbollah, had launched a fresh swarm of attack drones and missile strikes at Israeli military targets. However, Hezbollah told Reuters that its response to the Israeli assassination of another Hamas leader, commander Fuad Shukr, in Beirut last week “has not yet come”.

US President Joe Biden spoke with the leaders of both Egypt and Qatar on Tuesday, in which they discussed the nations’ combined efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, including through an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal.

It comes after Biden held “round-the-clock” crisis talks on Monday in an attempt to avert all-out-regional war in the Middle East.

Who is Hamas’ new political chief Yahya Sinwar?

20:30

Mike Bedigan

Yahya Sinwar has been announced the new political chief of Hamas following the recent assassination of Ismail Hanieyh.

The 62-year-old, who has spent half his adult life in Israeli prisons, was the most powerful Hamas leader left alive following the assassination of Haniyeh, which has left the region on the brink of a wider regional conflict after Iran vowed harsh retaliation.

Born in a refugee camp in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, Sinwar was elected as Hamas’ leader in Gaza in 2017 after gaining a reputation as a ruthless enforcer and an implacable enemy of Israel.

He was formerly head of the Al-Majd security apparatus which tracked, killed and punished Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel’s secret service before he was jailed.

Sinwar masterminded the October 7 attacks on Israel and has remained in Gaza since.

Hezbollah chief says Israel trying to frighten mourners of Hamas commander in Beirut

16:38

Andy Gregory

As he began his speech to mark one week since the assassination of Hamas commander Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said the sonic booms of Israeli warplanes flying overhead in Beirut were intended to provoke those gathered for the memorial.

“The [Israeli] enemy is breaking the sound barrier over the southern suburbs to frighten those gathered for the ceremony. It has such a small mind,” Lebanese outlet L’Orient Today reported Mr Nasrallah as saying.

Ultra-Orthodox protesters break into Israeli army base

16:19

Andy Gregory

Dozens of ultra-Orthodox protesters have broken into an Israeli army base near Tel Aviv, the military said, as demonstrations against call up orders for religious Jews previously exempt from conscription continued to flare.

The military condemned the incident at the Tel Hashomer base, which occurred after protesters managed to break in before being cleared by police. Footage shared by the Israeli police showed dozens of men in clothing traditionally worn by the ultra-Orthodox community confronting lines of police outside the base.

“Breaking into a military base is a serious offence and is against the law. The IDF condemns this violent behavior and insists that the protesters be brought to justice,” the military said in a statement.

Israel’s Supreme Court ordered the government in June to end a longstanding exemption and draft ultra-Orthodox Haredi seminary students into the military. The first call up papers were sent out about two weeks ago and the draftees are due to report to recruitment centres.

Draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews date back to the early days of the state of Israel, when the first prime minister David Ben-Gurion exempted about 400 students so they could devote themselves to religious study. In so doing, he hoped to keep alive sacred knowledge and traditions almost wiped out in the Holocaust.

‘Appalling’ if UN staff participated in 7 October atrocities, says UK

15:10

Andy Gregory

The UK Foreign Office has said it is “appalling” that nine members of the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) may have been involved in the October 7 attacks in southern Israel, and said anyone found to have participated “should face the full force of the law”.

Their statement follows a finding by the UN’s Office of Internal Oversight Services that, of 19 staff allegedly involved in the attacks, evidence suggests nine may have been involved.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “It’s appalling that nine members of UNRWA may have been involved in the October 7th atrocities. We welcome UNRWA’s decisive action and support their decision to terminate the contracts of these individuals.

“Anyone who participated in the horrific October 7 attacks should face the full force of the law.

“UNRWA performs lifesaving work in Gaza and is indispensable to the humanitarian operation. We are confident that UNRWA is strengthening its procedures, including on vetting, which is why, alongside France, Germany, Japan, and the vast majority of donors, we have restored funding to the agency.

“We will continue to work with UNRWA’s leadership to ensure the Colonna Report is implemented and it meets the highest standards of neutrality.”

Iran executes man, 34, accused of murder during Mahsa Amini unrest after ‘grossly unfair trial'

13:47

Andy Gregory

Iran has executed a 34-year-old man accused of killing a security officer during widespread unrest over the death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in 2022, state media said – in the first known protest-related execution since president Masoud Pezeshkian took office.

In November 2022, Reza Rasaei joined the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in his hometown of Sahneh, in the western province of Kermanshah, during which security agent Nader Bayrami was fatally stabbed. Bayrami is claimed to have been the intelligence chief for the Revolutionary Guards in Sahneh county.

Rasaei, who according to rights group Hengaw is a Kurdish member of a religious minority, was charged with Bayrami’s murder and sentenced to death in October 2023. He was executed on Tuesday, the official judiciary news agency Mizan reported.

Amnesty International said on its website that Rasaei was sentenced to death after “a grossly unfair trial that relied on his forced confessions obtained under torture”.

On Tuesday, air strikes killed five Palestinians in the Al-Bureij camp, in the central Gaza Strip, medics said, while two others were killed in a separate air strike in Rafah.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said Israeli military strikes had killed at least 30 Palestinians and wounded 66 others in the past 24 hours. “Many victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, where the teams of the ambulance and civil emergency service can’t reach,” the ministry said.

Hezbollah has launched a series of drone and rocket attacks into northern Israel – but warned that its much-anticipated retaliation for Israel’s killing of a top commander last week is still yet to come.

Hezbollah said it launched a swarm of attack drones at two military sites near Acre in northern Israel, and also attacked an Israeli military vehicle in another location.

The Israeli military said sirens sounding in Acre turned out to be a false alarm but that a number of hostile drones were identified crossing from Lebanon and one was intercepted. It said several civilians were injured to the south of the coastal city of Nahariya.

Israel also claimed to strike two Hezbollah facilities in south Lebanon.

But despite the fresh exchange of fire on Tuesday, a Hezbollah source told Reuters that “the response to the assassination of commander Fuad Shukr has not yet come.”

Earlier on Tuesday, four people were killed in a strike on a home in the Lebanese town of Mayfadoun, some 20 miles north of the border, medics and a security source said. Two additional security sources said those killed were Hezbollah fighters, but the group had not yet posted its usual death notices.

It said the nine included seven staffers who were fired previously over the claims.

Israel could launch a preemptive strike on Iran if it were certain that Tehran was preparing to attack the Jewish nation, Times of Israel reported citing Hebrew media following prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with security chiefs.

Iran has vowed retaliation against Israel following the assassination of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing so far. Haniyeh was killed just hours after Israel killed Hezbollah senior commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.

On Sunday the meeting chaired by Mr Netanyahu was attended by defense minister Yoav Gallant, military chief of staff Lt-Gen Herzi Halevi, Mossad head David Barnea and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.

During the meeting the option of striking Iran as a deterrence measure was discussed, Ynet reported.

However, Israeli officials stressed that a preemptive attack would only be considered upon receiving definite intelligence “confirming that Tehran was about to launch a strike”.

Haniyeh’s killing intended to extend Gaza war, says Palestinian president

05:15

Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

The killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was intended to prolong the Gaza conflict, said the president of the Palestinian Authority, ahead of his meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Mahmoud Abbas is expected to visit Russia on 12 August for talks with the Russian president in the wake of the assassination of Hamas’s political leader, RIA reported.

Mr Abbas told the news agency that Haniyeh’s killing in Tehran was “a cowardly act and a dangerous development in Israeli politics”.
