Putin ‘retreats to bunker’ amid heightened fears of assassination

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly heightened his security measures due to fears of assassination, according to a leaked European intelligence report.
  • These precautions include spending weeks in an underground bunker in the Krasnodar region and subjecting staff, such as bodyguards and cooks, to thorough screening and restrictions on personal devices.
  • The increased security follows the killing of General Fanil Sarvarov in December and alleged unverified attempts by Ukraine to attack Mr Putin's personal residence.
  • The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has observed corroborating evidence of enhanced security, including the deployment of additional air defence systems near Putin's residences.
  • Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that all measures are being taken to minimise danger amid a “terrorist threat” and successful longer-range Ukrainian strikes.
