Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to answer questions from Western journalists in St Petersburg on Thursday.

On the second day of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin will meet representatives of international news organizations to discuss Russia's domestic and foreign policy, according to his foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov.

In previous years, the question-and-answer session has typically lasted several hours.

Moscow is using the forum to showcase Russia on the international stage and, despite slowing economic growth, to project resilience after more than four years of war in Ukraine and Western sanctions.

The event got off to a rocky start on Wednesday after a Ukrainian drone attack triggered an alert that lasted several hours. As delegates arrived at the forum venue, black smoke could be seen rising above parts of the city.

According to the Kremlin, around 20,000 participants from more than 100 countries have registered for the forum.

The Russian government is hoping to attract more business representatives from Europe and the United States this year. Delegations from the American Chamber of Commerce and German companies are among those attending.

The German-Russian Chamber of Commerce is hosting its own event at the forum for the first time in several years.

Several lawmakers from the far-right Alternative for Germany are also attending. The politicians travelled to Russia despite advice from Germany's Foreign Office against the trip.
