SHAH ALAM, July 4 — The Selangor government will hold a special briefing on Monday to all Selangor state assemblymen and MPs regarding the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion in April, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
According to him, the session will involve all elected representatives regardless of political affiliation, adding that the decision was made during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly pre-council and bill briefing sessions yesterday.
“Additionally, I’ve requested the Selangor Speaker (Lau Weng San) to allow the state government to provide further clarification on the matter during the upcoming assembly sitting.
“The Selangor government remains committed to the principles of responsibility, transparency, and accountability. We fully honour the people’s trust and mandate,” he said in a statement via Facebook today.
The upcoming state assembly sitting will take place for two weeks starting July 7.
On April 1, a leak along a Petronas-owned gas pipeline caused an explosion, which sent flames up to 30m into the sky. Firefighters took nearly eight hours to extinguish the blaze.
The blast left a 9.8m-deep crater and damaged over 400 nearby homes.
In a special press conference on June 30 to announce the findings of investigations into the Putra Heights blast, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the criminal probe found no evidence of foul play, sabotage, or negligence in the events leading up to the explosion.
Occupational Safety and Health Department’s Petroleum Safety Division director Husdin Che Mat instead said forensic analysis found that the incident was due to a structural failure caused by environmental and geological factors.
The state government has announced its intention of setting up a special committee to propose follow-up measures to prevent the incident from recurring.
