NEARLY three weeks after a gas pipeline fire tore through parts of Putra Heights, residents say they are still in the dark about any official recovery or compensation plan from the government or responsible agencies.
Mohd Badly Nordin, speaking on behalf of affected residents, said that despite early indications that Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) would oversee repair works, no firm decision or detailed explanation regarding reconstruction specifications has been provided.
“We’re only hearing rumours, not an official action plan,” Astro Awani cited him saying when met after a Residents’ Action Committee formation meeting held yesterday.
“Are they going to rebuild according to our original house specifications, or just use their own standard designs? So far, there has been no briefing from the Selangor Menteri Besar, the State Assemblyman or the Member of Parliament,” he added.
More concerning still, Mohd Badly claimed that some residents had been advised to begin repair works using their own funds or early donations received, without any binding guarantee from the authorities.
“We’re being told to start repairs, take before and after photos. But we’re worried that once we’ve spent the money, the authorities might go quiet and not recognise the damage we’ve already absorbed,” he said.
Residents are also questioning the criteria for aid distribution, particularly regarding those who own more than one property, including rental units in the area.
“We need clarity. Will assistance cover rented homes too, or only those lived in by the owners?” he asked.
In response to the uncertainty, residents have established an Action Committee aimed at defending the rights of all affected victims. The committee will push to ensure that everyone impacted by the blaze receives fair treatment, compensation, and recognition for the losses and trauma endured.
Residents are now urging the Selangor state government to break its silence and deliver a formal explanation without further delay, to end the uncertainty faced by the community. - April 21, 2021
