THE Ministry of Finance (MoF) will maintain health protection for low-income households through mySalam, PeKa B40 and Skim Perubatan MADANI, while exploring long-term insurance solutions for the B40 group.
The Government has confirmed that the mySalam health protection scheme will continue until 2026, even as its original RM2 billion fund contribution begins to diminish, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying told Parliament today.
Replying to a question from Mordi Anak Bimol (Mas Gading), Lim said the National B40 Protection Fund — better known as mySalam — was first established in 2019 as a private trust account with an initial RM2 billion contribution from Great Eastern Holdings Limited.
The scheme provides free health protection to eligible B40 recipients and their spouses, who must also be beneficiaries of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme, with an upper age limit of 65.
She explained that mySalam offers hospitalisation benefits of RM50 per day for up to 14 days, amounting to a maximum of RM700 annually, for treatment in government, military or university hospitals.
Eligible individuals diagnosed with any of 50 critical illnesses — including cancer, kidney disease and heart attacks — receive a one-off payment of RM8,000. mySalam also covers the cost of approved medical devices, such as cardiac stents, up to RM30,000 per person.
Lim noted that mySalam was originally intended for a five-year implementation period from 2019 to 2023.
“However, in line with the Government’s commitment to ease the burden of low-income households facing unforeseen health challenges, the implementation of mySalam has been extended until 2026 through the 2024 and 2026 Budget Speeches,” it said.
Alongside mySalam, the Government will continue PeKa B40 and Skim Perubatan MADANI to address the healthcare needs of low-income communities and reduce the cost burden of medical treatment. A total of RM130 million has been allocated for both programmes in 2026.
Lim added MoF is working with Bank Negara Malaysia to engage licensed insurance and takaful operators by sharing data and implementation insights from mySalam.
The aim, it said, is to encourage industry players to develop more diversified and affordable protection products tailored to the B40 group. - November 27, 2025
