Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that the government is stepping up its commitment to flood recovery efforts by allocating additional funds to repair damaged schools, temporary evacuation centers (PPS), and other critical infrastructure. The initiative aims to address the destruction caused by the ongoing floods, which have severely impacted multiple states across Malaysia.

Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly gathering in Putrajaya, Anwar highlighted the urgency of rebuilding efforts as some regions, particularly Pahang and Johor, continue to face worsening conditions despite improvements in other areas.

"When the floods subside, substantial resources will be required to restore affected facilities. To address this, we are providing additional funding to repair schools and other necessary infrastructure,” Anwar said, emphasizing the importance of nationwide readiness for disaster management and recovery.

Anwar also acknowledged the proactive role of government-linked corporations (GLCs), including Khazanah Nasional, Petronas, and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), as well as local banks, in easing the burden on flood victims and supporting relief operations.

“These organizations have already taken commendable steps to assist, but the recovery effort requires a broader involvement,” he noted.

In a call to action, the prime minister urged private sector companies to play a more active role, not only by contributing funds but also by participating directly in relief and recovery operations.

"Private sector involvement is crucial during times like these. Their contributions, whether financial or through hands-on engagement in relief efforts, can make a significant difference,” he added.

Data from the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal revealed the extensive impact of the floods, which have affected 39 districts across Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Pahang, Perak, Melaka, and Johor.

Pahang and Johor are among the regions facing deteriorating conditions, with significant flooding leading to further displacements. The government’s readiness to address these challenges reflects its commitment to supporting affected communities.

Anwar’s appeal for private sector engagement underlines the importance of collaborative efforts in overcoming the crisis. Beyond financial aid, active participation from businesses can strengthen on-ground relief operations, ensuring that resources reach the communities that need them most.

The prime minister’s remarks serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to rebuild and recover, emphasizing the need for unity among government agencies, corporations, and private entities in responding to natural disasters.

As Malaysia continues to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders will be essential in ensuring that affected areas and communities recover swiftly and effectively.
