MALAYSIA saw 190,304 marriages and 60,457 divorces in 2024, according to the latest Marriage, Divorce and Reconciliation Statistics 2025 report published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on Wednesday.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin noted that the number of marriages increased by 0.9 per cent from 188,614 in 2023.
“The Crude Marriage Rate (CMR) remained unchanged at 5.6 per thousand population in 2024. Marriages among Muslims accounted for 72.3 per cent of all recorded marriages,” he said.
Divorces, however, rose by 4.1 per cent from 58,095 in 2023, causing the Crude Divorce Rate (CDR) to increase to 1.8 in 2024 from 1.7 per thousand population in 2023.
“The number of divorces among Muslims recorded a 7.3 per cent rise in 2024 (47,577) compared to 2023 (44,322),” he added.
The report also highlighted a 4.7 per cent decline in reconciliations, or rujuk, which fell to 5,563 in 2024 from 5,835 the previous year. Selangor recorded the highest number of rujuk at 1,148, while the Federal Territory of Labuan had the lowest at 13.
According to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), rujuk refers to “returning a wife who has been pronounced talaq raj’i to the marital bond through a specific declaration.” - November 20, 2025
