Kota Kinabalu: The inaugural Mount Trusmadi International Climbathon (MTIC) scheduled to be held in Tambunan on May 25 is set to play an important role in promoting eco-tourism in the district.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew, represented by the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary II Alesia Sion, said this in her speech at the launch of the event at the Pusat Sejadi Hutan Lipur Kawang on Tuesday.

“The Climbathon not only challenges the physical limits of the participants but it also serves as a catalyst for the promotion of eco-tourism in Tambunan.

“It is important to recognise the outcomes and benefits of this event as it promises to leave a lasting impact on Tambunan and its surrounding areas.

“Moreover, the event aligns perfectly with Tambunan’s vision of becoming the “Switzerland of the East.”

“By showcasing its natural beauty and cultural richness on a global stage, the Climbathon will promote Tambunan as a premier destination for travellers seeking adventure, tranquillity, and authentic experience and it may also attract investors, researchers, and conservationists, who share the commitment in preserving Tambunan’s natural heritage for future generations,” she said.

The MTIC jointly organised by Velocity Running Club, Sabah Forestry Department and Tambunan District Office will take place at Kupu-Kupu Gate, Nuluhon Forest Reserve, Mount Trusmadi in Tambunan.

It is open to two main events-30km and 21km races with sub-categories of 21km Open Men, 21km Open Women, 21km Veteran Men and 21km Veteran Women.

It offers a total cash prize of RM29,600 with the top five winners in the 30km category each receive RM3,500, RM2,500, RM1,500, RM800, RM500 respectively, and RM800, RM700, RM600, RM500, RM400 for the 21km sub-categories winners in addition to sponsored items.

Meanwhile, also present at the launching ceremony were State chief forest conservator Datuk Frederik Kugan, deputy chief forest conservator Musa Sallah, Velicity Running Club president Andrew Lian Awa, Keningau Police chief Yumpil Anak Gari, Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng representing KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital and other invited guests.
