Qatar has warned Iran not to use the Strait of Hormuz as a "pressure tool" in ongoing negotiations with the United States to end the current war.

The crisis would only be exacerbated if Tehran used the key waterway as leverage, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi by phone on Sunday, according to the government in Doha.

Freedom of the seas was "non-negotiable" as a matter of principle, Al Thani said.

While Pakistan has taken on an official role in mediating an end to the Iran war, Qatar has also been active behind the scenes.

US news website Axios has reported that Al Thani met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Miami on Saturday as part of efforts to end the war.
