QC students explore lawmaking, Dy urge youth to engage in public affairs

MANILA, Philippines — 120 senior high school students from Quezon City got a firsthand look at the legislative process as they joined the House of Representatives’ 2026 NxtGen Congress, where Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III urged young Filipinos to take an active interest in public affairs on Thursday.

The students participated in the three-day “NxtGen Congress: Youth Voices, Nation’s Choices” Capacity Building Seminar-Workshop held from August 25 to 27 at the House of Representatives.

Students were introduced to the role and functions of the House and taught them how a bill becomes a law, giving them practical exposure to how legislation is discussed and processed.

Dy, accompanied by House Secretary General Cheloy E. Velicaria-Garafil, visited the students at Makalintal Hall and told them he was encouraged by their interest in seeing how Congress works.

“I am also happy because you are interested in seeing how Congress works. Rest assured that Congress today is really striving to provide better service to our young people,” Dy told the students.

Dy also recounted his own entry into public service at 18 as a member of the Kabataang Barangay in 1980, before serving as a barangay captain, provincial board member, vice mayor, mayor, congressman, governor and vice governor.

The 120 students represented 12 schools under the Schools Division Office of Quezon City and also underwent sessions on committee deliberations, policy analysis, parliamentary procedure, legislative ethics and decorum, and public speaking in parliamentary proceedings.
