Kuala Lumpur: The proposed multi-storey car park at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Kota Kinabalu is scheduled for implementation under Rolling Plan 3 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to address severe daily congestion, the Senate was told.
Senator Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe (pic) said the project can no longer afford further delays, pointing out that the hospital currently has only 1,089 parking bays to accommodate more than 2,000 vehicles entering the facility daily.
According to the Health Ministry's written response to Phoong’s oral question, preliminary work for a new clinical and support block—which includes a multi-storey car park—is expected to conclude in the fourth quarter of 2026, with physical construction targeted to commence in 2028.
To manage current traffic pressures, the ministry has introduced several interim measures, including internal traffic reorganisations, stricter enforcement along emergency routes, improved passenger drop-off zones, and eight new public bus routes servicing QEH since June.
Phoong, who previously raised the long-standing issue with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in 2025, pledged to continue tracking progress in Parliament to ensure the Federal Government channels funding according to schedule.
