2024 has come to the beginning of the year. On 1st January 2024, a huge earthquake happened in the middle north part of Japan, Ishikawa prefecture, which caused trees to shake, buildings to be destroyed, lives to be killed and even tsunami warnings were issued.
Yoshimasa Hayashi, the chief cabinet secretary of Japan and Kansai Electric, stated that no anomalies have been detected at nuclear power plants close to the impacted areas after the earthquake.
According to NHK, which cited Japan Railways West, four bullet trains that had their fast travel suspended due to the earthquake, locking over 1,400 people inside for almost 11 hours, started operating again Tuesday morning.
The high-speed trains were stuck between the cities of Toyama and Kanazawa in central Japan.
Four trains between the stations of Toyama and Kanazawa left more than 1,400 people stranded after their travel was delayed for about 11 hours.
Warning of Tsunami
Waves predicted to be less than one meter are classified as "tsunami advisory" under Japan's tsunami warning system, waves predicted to be up to three meters as "tsunami warning," and waves predicted to be more than five meters as “major tsunami warning.”
Rescue effort by Japan
According to Mr. Kishida, he is directly in charge of the earthquake catastrophe response.
He revealed pictures of destruction on the Noto peninsula, where the ruined roads were still making it extremely difficult for rescuers to reach the northern point. According to him, the extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, as well as several fires, had been found by helicopter assessments.
"I have instructed to use all means possible to reach the site as soon as possible, as it is necessary to rescue victims of collapsed buildings as soon as possible," said Mr. Kishida.
Due to Japan's location at the meeting point of many continental and oceanic plates, the Japanese archipelago experiences regular earthquakes. According to a Japanese interviewee, Ikumi Tsuruoka, “We have preserved food, rechargeable light, radio, etc. at home for an emergency.” Hence, it is important to stay alert at any time and take precautions.
