Qualcomm just rolled out the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset to power the upcoming flagship phone that wasn’t the cream-of-the-crop tier, packing most premium features with slightly lower raw power, trading for greater flexibility in terms of device pricing.

In terms of the CPU, it is running the same 2 Prime + 6 Performance setup just like the “Elite” version, but with clock speeds downtuned to around 3.8GHz and 3.38GHz for the Prime and Performance cores, respectively ( The Elite is at 4.6GHz and 3.63GHz).

Meanwhile, the GPU has been pulled back a bit as well, and the absence of the High-Performance Memory cache also makes it a bit lacking for the hardcore enthusiasts, but definitely still enough to run through most games.

While the RAM and storage alongside ISP/camera support are maintained, the 5G modem is swapped from X85 to X80 instead, leading to a mild nerf in the theoretical maximum transfer speed of wireless communication, yet still plenty enough for daily use.

What Qualcomm doesn’t want to compromise is the Hexagon NPU though, supporting all the on-device AI stack such as INT2 precision and matrix acceleration features.

There’s also the aspect of better battery life for smartphones running this chip too, as the lower boost clock speeds consume less power in general, and assuming that brands continue to push on battery technology, it is going to be net positive for the users in general.
