Qualcomm has recently announced a pair of new mobile platforms meant for midrange and entry-level smartphones, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 respectively.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5

Starting off with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, this TSMC 4nm system-on-chip is powered by an 8-core Kryo CPU, understood to be packing four Cortex A720 performance cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz and four Cortex A520 efficiency cores at up to 2.0GHz. Qualcomm didn’t give performance benchmarks here but does say it has up to 8% better power efficiency.
The unspecified Adreno GPU meanwhile is claimed to have up to 21% improved performance compared to its predecessor. It also now comes with Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 andw Qualcomm Adaptive Performance FPS 3.0 for smoother gameplay. There’s also Snapdragon Game Super Resolution for upscaling support, along with Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI for up to 20% faster app launches than 18% less stuttering.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 memory, along with UFS 3.1 storage and can output up to 144Hz at FHD+ resolutions. As for imaging, it gets a dual ISP with support for up to 200MP or dual 16MP cameras. Curiously, it no longer has mmWave 5G support like its predecessor, and also loses out on support for USB speeds higher than USB 2.0.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 5

Next up, we have the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. This is also a 4nm SoC, but is fabbed by Samsung Foundries rather than TSMC, and features two Cortex A78 performance cores at 2.4GHz and 6 Cortex A55 efficiency cores at up to 2.0GHz, allowing for up to 10% better power efficiency.
It’s not particularly beefier than the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 with just a slight clock speed increase for the performance cores, but the unnamed Adreno GPU is said to be up to 77% better than its predecessor, with 90fps gaming possible for the first time on a 4 series chip. Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI is also present here, delivering 43% faster app launches and 25% less screen stutter.
One minor downgrade though is that the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 won’t even support LPDDR5 memory anymore, instead limited to just LPDDR4X memory. You do at least still get dual SIM dual active 5G + 5G/4G connectivity now, along with WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX Adaptive. It also supports up to FHD+ resolutions at up to 144Hz, and supports up to a 108MP camera.
Qualcomm says that you can expect the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 in action via their OEM partners later this year, with the former set to debut on Honor and REDMI devices, while the latter will be first seen on devices from Oppo, Realme and REDMI.
