Queen departs for Uzbekistan to deliver royal address at Islamic Civilisation Conference

HER Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, has departed for Tashkent to attend an international conference examining the role of scientific traditions in Islamic civilisation, its sources, potential and contemporary challenges.

According to a statement shared via the official Facebook page of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the conference will be held on 5 May at the Centre for Islamic Civilisation in Tashkent.

The Queen, who is also Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, is scheduled to deliver a royal address before an audience of more than 200 participants comprising scholars, intellectuals and statesmen from diverse backgrounds.

“Her Majesty, who is also the Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), will deliver a royal address to more than 200 participants consisting of scholars, thinkers and statesmen from various backgrounds,” the statement said.

Accompanying the Queen on the visit is Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir.

She departed earlier today from the Royal Hangar at Senai International Airport, Johor.

Also in the delegation are Istana Negara Comptroller of the Royal Household Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani and his wife, Puan Sri Dr Noor Azizah Abdul Latiff, as well as Johor Mufti Datuk Yahya Ahmad.

The visit underscores Malaysia’s continued engagement in international academic and civilisational discourse, particularly in highlighting the historical and contemporary contributions of Islamic scientific traditions. - May 3, 2026
