Queen Elizabeth II “hid behind a bush” to avoid meeting Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu during a state visit.

Appearing on Newsnight on Tuesday (31 March), royal expert David Dimbleby discussed the time the late Queen reportedly hid from one of the “most odious dictators” in 1978. The trip marked the first time a Communist head of state had made a state visit to the UK.

“ She did hide in the bushes to get away from him,” Dimbleby said, explaining that she dove behind the foliage of her Buckingham Palace gardens when she saw Ceausescu and his wife Elena walking through the grounds.
