Rafizi and Nik Nazmi to remain active in parliament despite cabinet exit

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that the resignations of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their ministerial posts were personal decisions made on principle, and not indicative of instability within the administration.

While both MPs no longer hold Cabinet portfolios, Anwar expressed confidence in their continued service and contributions in Parliament for the benefit of the rakyat and the nation's progress.

“The government respects this decision and, at the same time, expresses confidence that both Honourable Members will continue to serve and play an active role as Members of Parliament in the interest of the people and the country’s development,” Anwar stated in a written reply published on the Parliament’s official website.

He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim (PN–Arau), who had suggested that the resignations had sparked perceptions of a weakening MADANI administration and queried whether the term 'Unity Government' remained appropriate.

Anwar dismissed such suggestions, maintaining that the MADANI Government remains stable and firmly supported by all its component parties.

“The MADANI Government remains strong with the unwavering support of all component parties that form the current administration,” he said.

“Close cooperation and mutual respect among these parties form the foundation for the continuity of national governance and the implementation of the reform agenda.”

Rafizi, MP for Pandan, and Nik Nazmi, MP for Setiawangsa, announced on 28 May their resignations as Minister of Economy and Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability respectively, effective 17 June and 4 July.

Their decision followed their defeat in retaining the positions of Deputy President and Vice President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) during the party's internal elections in May. - August 15, 2025
