Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, PKR's deputy president and Economy Minister, recently revealed that he had offered to step down from both his Cabinet role and party position to concentrate fully on preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16). His offer came during a brief leave of absence from April 29 to May 5, during which he met privately with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Rafizi reportedly shared his concerns that the current political strategy lacked the boldness PKR once had when it was in Opposition. He conveyed to both leaders that stepping away from his formal responsibilities would allow him to return to aggressive campaigning, unbound by the constraints of ministerial protocol. His aim was to refocus his energy on reconnecting with the grassroots, a role he believes he can play more effectively outside the Cabinet.

Despite his willingness to step aside, both Anwar and Saifuddin advised against it. They urged him to continue contesting for the deputy president post in the upcoming party elections and to remain in the Cabinet, indicating their confidence in his leadership and strategic value at both levels.

Rafizi’s decision to take a short leave was largely driven by the need to address internal tensions following PKR’s 2025 party elections. Allegations of irregularities and unexpected losses of several senior figures raised concerns among members. Rafizi took it upon himself to meet with affected candidates and ensure their voices were heard, aiming to maintain party unity during a sensitive time.

He explained that balancing ministerial duties with party responsibilities has become increasingly difficult, especially when navigating conflicting expectations. As a minister, he is bound by administrative consensus, which limits his ability to express opinions as freely as he could during his days in the Opposition. For him, separating party and government roles is not only necessary for effective leadership but also represents a healthier political culture.

With GE16 just two years away, Rafizi remains focused on what he sees as the core challenge—reenergizing the party's base and refining campaign strategies. His readiness to make personal sacrifices highlights the urgency he feels in positioning PKR for electoral success in a rapidly shifting political landscape.
