In a bold and unprecedented move, nine MPs from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), led by Pandan MP and former party deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, have turned the tide by demanding a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the appointment of senior judges - including the vacant position of Chief Justice. This internal challenge from within the ruling coalition marks a refreshing shift towards genuine checks and balances, with Rafizi and his comrades effectively playing the role of a rational opposition within the government.
At the heart of their demand lies a concern shared by many Malaysians - the integrity and independence of the judiciary. Rafizi, flanked by other key PKR lawmakers such as Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Subang MP Wong Chen and Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, voiced concern over alleged irregularities and lack of transparency in the judicial appointment process. He highlighted four major issues, including delays in acting on Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) recommendations, vacancies in key positions, and questionable urgency behind recent JAC meetings that allegedly breached procedural norms.
“Defending the independence of the judiciary is a core pillar of PKR’s and Pakatan Harapan’s reform agenda,” Rafizi declared during a press conference, signalling a clear intent to uphold the coalition's founding principles - even if it means standing apart from cabinet consensus.
What makes this move particularly significant is the call for parliamentary intervention. The group will formally urge the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform, chaired by William Leong, to initiate proceedings that could summon top government officials for testimony. This suggests a serious push not just for clarification, but accountability at the highest levels.
Their initiative doesn’t stop at Parliament. Rafizi and his team are mobilising public support through nationwide forums and an online petition, beginning with their first forum on July 13, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor. Their objective: to raise public awareness and pressurise the government to act on three demands - initiate the RCI, ensure transparent appointments, and honour JAC's existing nominations.
Nik Nazmi aptly summarised the sentiment, calling it a “defining issue” that strikes at the heart of PKR’s long-standing fight for institutional reform. “If we don’t raise this now, we’re not doing our job as MPs,” he said.
The move by Rafizi and his allies, including MPs Rodziah Ismail, Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, S. Kesavan, and Onn Abu Bakar (though the last two were absent from the press conference), could be seen as a crucial moment of principled dissent. Rather than toeing the line, these lawmakers are reinforcing the idea that loyalty to reform is greater than loyalty to positions.
Rafizi clarified that the call for an RCI should not be seen as opposition to the current administration, stressing that all nine PKR MPs remain firmly supportive of the federal government and the ruling coalition.
As public pressure mounts and the integrity of judicial institutions remains under scrutiny, Rafizi’s internal opposition serves as a timely reminder that governments must govern themselves first - with transparency, fairness, and accountability.
Whether this move disrupts or strengthens the government remains to be seen, but it is undeniably a bold stride toward a more mature democratic culture in Malaysia.
