Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli, the Deputy President of PKR and current Minister of Economy, is reportedly considering stepping down from his party post due to dissatisfaction over internal party elections. During a recent closed-door discussion with his supporters following the PKR Central Leadership Council meeting on April 23, Rafizi is said to have voiced frustration over the party’s election process, which he allegedly believes to be flawed and unjust.

While some speculation arose about him vacating his ministerial office, sources have denied any such move. Instead, Rafizi has taken a one-month leave, ending on May 31, which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described as a routine break. Rafizi has also recommended an external audit of the party’s election mechanism, and the results of this assessment are expected to be released in early May. These findings may influence his decision on whether to continue in his current political roles.

In the meantime, re-elections in several PKR branches have resulted in leadership changes in Selayang (Selangor), Jempol (Negeri Sembilan), and Pasir Salak (Perak). The nomination process for the party’s central leadership council has been rescheduled for May 8 and 9. Despite the internal turmoil, Anwar has stated that there is no issue with Rafizi’s temporary absence.

Despite the brewing internal party crisis, Rafizi reappeared on social media on May 3 and shifted his focus towards national issues. He addressed opposition claims that the federal government was sidelining states governed by PAS, particularly Kelantan, in tax revenue allocation. Rafizi challenged the narrative being pushed by PAS and Perikatan Nasional, arguing that the accusations were part of a long-standing political strategy to stir discontent among voters in opposition-held territories.

He pointed to remarks by Pasir Putih MP Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, who recently demanded that PAS be given authority to collect Kelantan’s taxes directly. Rafizi interpreted this demand as a continuation of a broader opposition tactic aimed at painting the federal government as neglectful of development in PAS-led states. He rejected the idea that the tax revenue collected from these states was being unfairly withheld and argued that such claims were part of a recycled political narrative designed to undermine public trust in the unity government.

As internal party challenges and external political narratives unfold, Rafizi’s next move remains highly anticipated.
