The public is dumbfounded with this revelation.
In the Yang Berhenti Menteri (YBM) podcast, Rafizi Ramli claimed that Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was covertly tracked for months via a hidden GPS device placed under his vehicle in what he described as a targeted "gutter politics" operation.
Rafizi claimed in the podcast that the operation was pre-planned, coordinated with leaked CCTV footage, and the result of long-term tracking.
Was that guesswork from Rafizi after assessing the videos that went viral?
Public statements from Nik Nazmi himself and official accounts however do not establish that Nik Nazmi knowingly or consciously realized he was being tracked for months beforehand and still chose to proceed with the private meeting.
In fact, Nik Nazmi in a public statement stated that the meeting in Petaling Jaya was a continuation of a project discussion that began earlier with friends at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
He maintained that they were reviewing project materials, insisted no improper or indecent conduct occurred, and acknowledged a lapse in judgment regarding the optics and religious enforcement (khalwat) regulations.
If Nik Nazmi was aware that he was under active, hostile surveillance, it is logical for him to avoid meetings in private settings with a non-mahram woman that could leave them vulnerable to enforcement action (such as a raid by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department, JAIS).
Even if it wasn't tracked in real-time awareness, Nik Nazmi should be aware that he is a high-profile figure and together with Rafizi, is setting out to re-map the political landscape in the country, he should exercise stricter caution regarding private one-on-one meetings.
Because Nik Nazmi publicly admitted to a "lapse in judgment" it does not diminish the breach of morality or change his initial actions.
The core issue has evolved beyond a personal moral failure.
The woman involved apparently was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Yayasan Hijau Malaysia—a subsidiary under the ministry Nik Nazmi previously helmed.
Regardless of how the scandal was exposed—even if by a hidden GPS tracker or an orchestrated trap—the focus must remain on the individual’s actions.
Since Nik Nazmi admits to a "lapse in judgment," he himself already have compromised the high ground required for him and Bersama to reform the system
Coming out from this, it appears that that the most effective way still is for leaders to ensure their own conduct remains beyond reproach if they wish to change the conduct in how politics are practised in this country.
