RANAU: Continuous heavy rain triggered flash floods, landslides and a road accident in several parts of Ranau and Kundasang on Sunday, prompting police and Civil Defence personnel to respond to emergency reports and monitor affected areas.
Ranau District Police Chief Supt Mursalin Mahmud urged residents to remain vigilant as prolonged rainfall could cause further flooding, landslides and hazardous road conditions.
Police received a report of a landslide behind Surau Al Taqwah at Kampung Dumpiring Bawah, Kundasang, at 5.19pm. The affected area measured approximately 40ft by 20ft, but no casualties were reported.
At 5.58pm, police personnel, assisted by officers from Bundu Tuhan police station, were dispatched to Kampung Sinisian, Bundu Tuhan, following reports of flash flooding and a landslide.
Upon arrival, they found a white Perodua Kancil had been swept away by floodwaters and overturned in the landslide area. No casualties were reported.
Another incident was reported at Kampung Pahu, Bundu Tuhan, at 6.40pm, where flash flooding affected the road.
Police inspections found a blocked culvert had caused water, rocks and debris to overflow onto the road. Maintenance work to clear the affected route was being carried out by DCTF Group.
Separately, a road accident occurred along Jalan Poring Baru, Ranau, when a local male motorcyclist lost control and crashed. He was conscious when found and was taken to Ranau Hospital for treatment.
The Kundasang Civil Defence operations unit received a report at 4.43pm of fast-flowing water crossing a road in Kundasang Lama following heavy rain.
Personnel from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Pupa Kundasang were deployed to monitor the area and assess the situation until 6.22pm.
They found muddy water carrying rocks and soil flowing across the road, posing danger to motorists and potentially disrupting traffic.
A resident’s house was also affected by water accumulation and overflow.
From 8pm to 8.39pm, Civil Defence personnel conducted follow-up monitoring of a landslide at Kampung Gorowot, Kundasang, believed to have been caused by soil erosion.
The incident caused part of the road shoulder to collapse, sending a Kancil into the affected area and leaving the main route impassable to vehicles. No injuries were reported.
Civil Defence personnel said monitoring would continue to help safeguard nearby residents and assess the situation.
Mursalin reminded the public to report incidents promptly so that the authorities could respond and provide assistance where necessary.
He said Ranau police remained on standby to safeguard the safety and well-being of residents, while the Kundasang Civil Defence operations unit would continue monitoring developments and remain prepared for further emergencies.
